Gig Review: The Tom Syson Quintet

An Evening of Great, Straight Ahead, British Jazz

The first JazzUp! concert of 2023 at Hitchin’s Club 85 featured the remarkable Tom Syson Quintet. Tom is a noted jazz trumpeter and composer who emerged from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Birmingham Jazz Orchestra. Much of Tom’s work has been with large ensembles but he is equally at home with small groups. On this occasion, Tom’s band comprised Olly Sarkar (drums), Dave Ferris (keys), Dave Mannington (upright bass) and Chris Montague (guitar).

The band performed flawlessly throughout the evening, largely drawing material from Tom’s well received albums “Green” (2017) and “Different Coloured Days” (2019).  I was initially a little anxious about the sonic mix of a band when I saw a rock style electric guitar, in this case a Telecaster, paired with an acoustic double bass as it can easily end up as an aural mismatch. However, I needn’t have worried. Chris Montague worked his Tele with great sensitivity and not only demonstrated the versatility of the instrument but showcased his own virtuosity and also provided brilliant support for his bandmates’ solos. His interaction with Olly’s drumming was remarkable.

Tom’s trumpet playing was technically flawless and emotionally engaging throughout the set. He has a clear and crisp tone that is full of warmth and depth and demonstrated a remarkable sense of control and expression throughout his solos, even when delivering searing, high-register licks. Tom also engaged with some great synergistic interplay with longtime band member, Dave Ferris, in a way that only results from years of working together and personal understanding.

Overall, this was a remarkable performance from accomplished musicians -don’t miss them if you get a chance.
